CAPE CORAL, Fla. – It was another exciting day on the diamond for the Regents softball team today.  The ladies got off to a slow start and fell behind the Eastern Nazarene College Lions  4-0 after just 3 and ½ innings of play.  However, they would not give in and slowly started chipping away at the Lions lead.  Rockford would score a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout by shortstop Alexis Ford (Cortland, Ill./DeKalb) to bring the Regents to within 3 runs.  The Regents would then get another run in the bottom of the fifth on another RBI groundout; this time by pitcher Eryn Dougherty (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette).  In the bottom of the 6th inning, Rockford was able to pull within one run courtesy of an RBI double to left center field by Alexis Ford.  It was not looking good for Rockford as the ladies were still down a run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th inning with just a runner on first base.  After a single by Dougherty put runners on first and second, Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) roped a line drive over the third baseman’s head and down the left field line to tie the game at 4 all.  Following an infield single which loaded the bases, Alexis Ford stepped up to the plate and drove in the game winning run on a walk-off single between the shortstop and third baseman.  The win moved Rockford College to 2-1 on the season.

Rockford was able to hammer out 11 hits during its comeback victory in Monday’s game.  Alexis Ford was the hero at the plate going 3-4 with 3 RBI including knocking in the game winning run.  Her stellar performance at the plate raised her average to .333 for the season with a team-leading 5 RBI.  Junior catcher Jossilyn Jones continued her dominance at the plate going 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Jones is now hitting .364 so far this year with team highs in both walks and runs scored with 3 apiece.   Senior outfielder Bridget Kennedy (Sugar Grove, Ill./Aurora Christian) was a perfect 2-2 hitting in the game with a walk, a run scored and a sacrifice bunt.  Kennedy is hitting an impressive .400 through 4 games with 2 walks and 2 runs scored.  Pitcher/Infielder Paige Newhuis (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) went 2-3 against the Lions and scored the game tying run in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Newhuis leads the team with .500 batting average this year.

Senior pitcher Eryn Dougherty was lights out in relief on the mound today for Rockford.  Dougherty surrendered no runs, no hits and struck out 3 batters in 3.2 innings of work to pick up her first win of the 2012 season.  The lone base runner against Dougherty came in the 6th inning on a hit batsman.  However, the senior got the next batter to ground out to end the inning.  With the win Dougherty moves to 1-1 on the season with a 4.94 ERA and 5 strike outs.

The softball team dropped their second game of the afternoon on Monday, 6-3 to Wheaton College.  The Regents will return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 6th at noon and 2 p.m. to face Finlandia University and Geneva College.
