FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Rockford College softball team opened its season up on Sunday March 4th in the Gene Cusic Class in Ft. Myers, Fla.  After dropping their opening game of the 2012 campaign, the ladies regrouped nicely and won a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings.  Rockford struck first as they scored in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead on 2-out RBI single up the middle by Jennifer Zulkanycz (Norco, Calif./Norco).  The Vikings would answer back to tie the game in the 4th inning with single through the left side with only one out.  Bethany Lutheran would get runners on 2nd and 3rd later in the inning with only one out, but Regents pitcher Sarah Moritz (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) would buckle down and strand both runners, dispelling the Vikings threat.   The Regents would take advantage of what would prove to be a critical error by Bethany Lutheran in the bottom half of the fifth inning.  After the infield error extended the inning, Alexis Ford (Cortland, Ill./DeKalb) roped a single through the left side of the infield for what would end up being the game-winning RBI.  With the win Rockford improves to 1-1 on the season.

Pitcher Sarah Moritz was the star of the game for the Regents on Sunday.  The freshman pitched a complete game in her first career collegiate outing.  Moritz allowed just one run on three hits over her seven solid innings of work.  She struck out 5 batters and needed just 87 pitches to throw a complete game.

The top of the order set the tone offensively for the Regents.  Leadoff hitter Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) went 1-2 with a walk and scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning for Rockford.  Senior outfielder Bridget Kennedy (Sugar Grove, Ill./Aurora Christian) went 2-3 on the afternoon and scored the opening run of the ballgame hustling from second base on a hard hit single to center field.  Alexis Ford and Jennifer Zulkanycz each went 1-3 with an RBI in the game.

The softball team will be back in action on Monday, March 5th at noon against Eastern Nazarene and later at 2 p.m. against Wheaton College.
