MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Rockford College women’s basketball team was looking to finish its NAC regular season strong with a win at the MSOE Raiders. The Regents jumped out to a 15-4 lead over the Raiders in part due to the shooting of senior Nicole Olson (Shannon, Ill./Eastland). Olson scored 7 points during that stretch connecting on all 3 of her shot attempts including opening the game with a 3-point basket for the Regents. The teams traded baskets for most of the remainder of the half with Rockford heading into halftime leading 26-19. Just over midway through the second half, the Raiders went on a 7-0 run to cut the Regent lead down to a single point with 7 minutes and 42 seconds remaining in the game. It was at that point that the Regents’ seniors would take control of the remainder of the game. Senior Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) would score the next 4 points in the game; followed by senior Nicole Olson burying another 3-point shot to put Rockford back up 8 and end the MSOE threat. Rockford would go on to win the game by that 8-point margin, 52-44. After being outrebounded 40-32 in the previous meeting, the Regents flipped the script on the glass Wednesday outrebounding the Raiders 41-32 in the win. It was dominant performance for the Regents as they never trailed during the game against a very good MSOE team.
Rockford got different types of contributions from many of its players in Wednesday’s win. Britney Curry was the Regents’ leading scorer for the 20th time this season scoring 17 points. Curry also was also key on the defensive side of the floor corralling 8 rebounds, recording 3 steals and blocking a shot. Nicole Olson scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting including making 3 out of her 4 three-point attempts. Olson also got 6 rebounds and 2 assists for the Regents. Sophomore Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) had a very good all-around game for the Rockford scoring 9 points with 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. Senior Dani Buttel (Pecatonica, Ill./Pecatonica) scored 6 points, got 2 steals and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The women’s basketball team will return home on Saturday, February 18th to host the NAC Challenge Game. The NAC Challenge Game involves teams from the NAC North Division playing teams from the NAC South Division according to where each team finished. The Regents will host the Edgewood College Eagles at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday as the two teams each finished in 5th place in their respective divisions.
