ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Rockford College men’s and women’s indoor track team traveled Michigan this past weekend to take part in an enormous 2-day meet hosted by NCAA Division III member Grand Valley State University. It will be one of the largest, if not the largest, meets that the Regents will compete in all season. The GVSU Big Meet featured over 80 teams and 1,800 student-athletes from across the Midwest. This will also be on of the more challenging meets of the season as student-athletes ranging from NCAA Division III institutions all the way up to Division I student-athletes took part in the 2-day competition.
The men’s team saw multiple student-athletes set personal bests over the weekend. Tim Lydy (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) set personal bests in both the 3000 meter and 5000 meter events. The freshman shattered his old best time in the 5000 meter race by over 30 seconds finishing with a time of 16:30.23 placing him 153rd. In the 3000 meter race Lydy topped his previous best mark by about 5 seconds from the week prior, finishing 60th and recording a time of 9:34.75. Freshman Carl Rapp (Union, Ill./Belvidere North) competed in the mile race and set a new personal best as well. Rapp finished 43rd with a time of 4:36.69 besting his previous top time by just over 10 seconds. Jarod Baldonado (Phoenix, Ariz./Copper Canyon) set a personal best in the 60-meter dash finishing in 77th with a time of 7.86 seconds. Baldonado also competed in the long jump finishing 27th with a jump of 5.58 meters.
It was also a good day on the women’s side as well for Rockford. Sophomore Genesis Cerrato (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) ran in both the 5000 meter and 3000 meter events. In the 5000 meter event Cerrato finished in 76th place with a personal best time of 19:29.02. Cerrato placed 31st in the 3000 meter with a time 11:15.29. Freshman Lindsay Maas (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) participated in the 800 meter race where she also set new personal best. The freshman finished in 77th place with a time of 2:39.56 which was a full 3 seconds faster than her previous best in the event. Freshman Stephanie Tassone (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) competed in 3 events over the weekend for the Regents. Tassone established a person best distance in the long jump of 3.71 meters finishing in 41st place. In the triple jump, Tassone brought home a 16th place finish with total distance of 9.64 meters and finished 59th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 9.31 seconds.
The indoor track teams will be back in action this Friday when they travel up to Madison, Wis. to compete in the UW-Madison Red and White Open. The meet is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
