MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Looking to continue its momentum from Wednesday’s win over Aurora, the women’s basketball team headed into Wisconsin on Saturday night to square off against the Alverno College Inferno.   In the previous meeting on February 5, 2011 the Regents posted a 74-62 win over the Inferno and were looking to win the second straight meeting in the series.  The Regents got off to a good start scoring on each of their first four possessions taking an 8-3 lead.  However, the Inferno caught on fire from beyond the arc as they connected on their first four 3-point attempts of evening to keep them in the game.  After a 14 all tie the Regents buckled down defensively and went on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the first half.  Rockford would see its lead cut down to just a single point near the end of the half but immediately went on a mini run to close the half and take a 35-31 halftime lead.   The second half opened with the Regents clicking on all cylinders.  Rockford scored 14 of the first 17 points to increase its lead to a game high 15 points at the 12:26 mark.  Alverno would not go into the night quietly as they scored the next 7 points making it a 49-41 Regent lead.  Rockford would extend its lead back up to 13 over the next four minutes only to see Alverno storm back to take a 59-58 lead with 1:42 remaining.  The Regents would continue to battle and tie the game at 59 and again at 61 at the free throw line to force overtime.  The overtime period was close the entire way as no team led by more than 3 points.  Down 2 with 11 seconds left Rockford had a chance to tie the game at the free throw line but only connected on 1 of 2 attempts.  After giving up an easy fast break layup, Rockford had one final chance to tie the game but the 3-point attempt fell short and the Regents fell 72-69.  Rockford was ultimately done in at the free throw line.  The Regents missed 12 free throws going 8-20 from the charity stripe.  With the loss Rockford is now 3-3 against Alverno since joining the NAC.

The Regents saw all five starters score in double-figures against Alverno.  Senior guard Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds for her 8th double-double of the season.  The senior also had 4 steals, 3 assists and blocked a shot in the game.  Curry’s baseline jumper with 54 seconds left in overtime pushed her over the 1,500 point mark for her career.  Curry becomes just the 3rd Regent women’s basketball player to achieve the milestone.  Senior guard Nicole Olson (Shannon, Ill./Eastland) scored 13 points including making all of the Regents 3-point baskets.  The senior also pulled in 5 rebounds, had 1 assist and recorded a steal.  Sophomore Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) scored 12 points on 6-8 shooting from the floor.  Bjerning also corralled 8 rebounds and had 2 assists.  Junior Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) had a very solid all-around game for Rockford.  Lawler scored 11 points, snagged 8 rebounds, had 6 assists, blocked 3 shots, and got 2 steals.  Senior Dani Buttel (Pecatonica, Ill./Pecatonica) was within 1 rebound of her 3rd double-double this season.  The senior scored 10 points while getting 9 rebounds.

The women’s basketball team will be back in action at home for Senior Day this Tuesday, February 7th when they host Dominican University at 7:00 p.m.  Tuesday’s game will have a little extra meaning as it will be the Play 4Kay Game.  During the evening the Regents will try to raise awareness and help support the fight against breast cancer.
