Regents Sweep Spartans Snapping Skid

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College women’s basketball team played one of their best games of the year on Wednesday night against the Aurora University Spartans. The Regents led for final 33 minutes and 30 seconds of the game. Rockford fell behind by 5 points early in the contest but quickly battled back to erase the Spartan lead and take their first lead of the evening six and a half minutes into the game. The ladies were able to build their lead up to as much as 11 points in the first half and entered halftime with a 33-26 lead. The second half started out well for the Regents as they continued to build on their lead and increased it to a game high 13-points with twelve minutes remaining. The Spartans would not go away easily as they went on an 11 to 1 run over the next five minutes to cut the Rockford led down to just 3 points. Bound and determined to win, the Regents quickly seized back control of the game building the lead back up to 10 points and icing the game. The 64-53 win is the Regents 5th straight victory over arch rival Aurora University and it snapped a 14 game losing streak dating back to November 2011.
The Regents had an astounding 4 players record double-doubles and multiple players set career or season highs in the victory over Aurora. Senior forward Dani Buttel (Pecatonica, Ill./Pecatonica) set career highs as a Regent in points with 18 and rebounds with 13 for her second double-double of the year. The senior had a solid shooting night going 5-9 from the floor and 8-11 from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) recorded her second double-double of the season as well scoring 13 points and grabbing a career high 11 rebounds. Bjerning also added an assist and a steal for the Regents. Junior forward Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) earned her third double-double this season scoring 11 points and also setting a career best with 13 rebounds. Senior Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the year. Curry narrowly missed recording a triple-double as she also had 6 assists as well as a blocked shot. Rockford was extremely effective at the free throw line making nearly twice as many free throws, 28, as Aurora attempted, 15. The Regents also crashed the boards hard outrebounded the Spartans 54-41.
The women’s basketball team will return to court on Saturday, February 4 against Alverno College. The game will be played at Alverno in Milwaukee, Wis. with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
