Regents Take Part in Spartan Open

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Rockford College Indoor Track team took part in the Spartan Open this past weekend hosted by the University of Dubuque. This was a large and challenging meet for the Regents featuring schools from both the CCIW and the WIAC. It was also the first meet of the season the Regents have taken part that recorded a team score. Both the men’s and women’s teams placed 7th at the Spartan Open.
The men’s team saw great success from a group of freshman runners on Saturday. Freshman Tim Lydy (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) was the top finisher for the Regents at the Spartan Open. Lydy placed 2nd in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:01.18. It was the top time for any Regent this year in the 5000 meter run and Lydy’s highest finish so far this year in any event. Freshman Carl Rapp (Union, Ill./Belvidere North) participated in both the mile run and the 3000 meter run. Rapp finished 7th in the mile with a time of 4:50.16 and set a personal best in the 3000 meter with a time 9:39.75. Freshman Jared Baldonado (Phoenix, Ariz./Copper Canyon) competed in the 4x400 relay, the 55 meter, and the long jump. Baldonado had his best performance in the long jump where he placed 12th and set a new Rockford College record with a jump of 5.86 meters.
On the women’s side it was also a group of young runners leading the way for the Regents. Stephanie Tassone (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) competed in the 200 meter, 55 meter, 4x400 relay and the triple jump. The freshman placed 3rd in the triple jump with a distance of 9.70 meters. In addition Tassone set a personal best with a time of 30.30 seconds in the 200 meter run, placing her 15th in the event. Sophomore Ashley Eggert (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem) participated in the 400 meter, 800 meter and the 4x400 relay for the Regents. Eggert had her highest finish in the 400 meter run placing 6th with a time of 1:14.46.
The indoor track teams will return to competition on Saturday February 4th at the UW-Parkside Classic in Kenosha, Wis. The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m.
