WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Regents women’s basketball team cannot seem to catch any breaks this season.  After getting off to a fast 3-2 start to the year and 2-0 start in conference play, the team has been hit with a plague of injuries and gone through more than its fair share of struggles.  Saturday night the Regents went on the road to face a tough Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders team.  For the vast majority of the first half, the game was at most a two possession game with both the Regents and Crusaders having leads during that time frame.  However, the Crusaders were able to stretch out their lead by scoring the final 7 points of the half and take a 34-22 lead into the break.  Rockford was never able to substantially cut into the lead Maranatha had built up in the closing minutes of the first half and fell 62-47 on the road to the Crusaders.  After the loss the Regents are now 8-2 against Maranatha Baptist Bible College since joining the Northern Athletics Conference for the 2006-07 season.

The majority of the scoring was done by two Regent seniors.  Dani Buttel (Pecatonica, Ill./Pecatonica) was tied for the team high in scoring and posted her first double-double as a Regent with 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) also scored a team best 15 points, corralled 8 rebounds, dished out 3 assists, had 3 steals, and blocked 2 shots.  It was the 13th time this season that Curry has scored at least 15 points in a game.

Senior Britney Curry continues to ascend up the all-time career rankings for women’s basketball players at Rockford College.  Currently Curry is 3rd in points scored (1,469), 6th in rebounds (614), 4th in steals (215), and 4th in blocks (67).  In Saturday’s game the senior set the record for field goal attempts in a career (1,387) breaking the previous record of 1,376 attempts held by Staci Brown.  Curry is also 3rd in field goals made (547), 3rd in free throws made (344) and 2nd in free throw attempts (535).  With 6 regular season games remaining, the senior is still within shouting distance of climbing up the ladder in all of the aforementioned categories, and can move into the top ten in career assists with just 4 assists over the duration of the season.

The women’s basketball team will be back in action at home on Wednesday February 1st at home to face rival Aurora University at 7:00 p.m. at the Seaver Center.  Rockford is 4-4 against Aurora since joining the NAC, and the Regents have won 4 straight against the Spartans with the most recent coming back on November 30, 2011 when they won at Aurora 63-58.
