WATERTOWN, Wis. – The men’s basketball team earned a much needed 72-65 victory on Saturday against the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders. The first half of the game featured 5 ties and 6 lead changes as neither team was able to establish and build on a lead until very late in the first half. With just over three and a half minutes remaining before halftime and the score tied at 27, Rockford used an 11-3 run to take a 38-30 lead into the break and develop some momentum going into the half. The Regents came out of halftime and built their lead to double-digits on 3 separate occasions with their largest lead of the evening coming at the 12:22 mark leading 50-39. The Crusaders would not give in as they promptly went on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 50. As the two teams traded baskets over the next two and a half minutes, it appeared as though the Regents were in for another game that would be decided on the last possession of the game. However, that would not be the case as the Regents scored the next 11 points giving them a 63-52 lead with only 70 seconds remaining to seal a tough road victory. The free throw line was once again the story of the game for the Regents, this time in a positive way. On a difficult shooting night, the Regents needed to be clutch at the free throw line and they were. Coming off of one of their worst free throw shooting games, Rockford bounced back nicely going 20 for 26 at the line making twice as many free throws as Maranatha attempted.
Rockford College saw only 3 players score in double-figures on Saturday. Senior Paul Hall (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) scored a team best 22 points including going an impressive 11 for 13 at the free throw line. The senior also corralled 4 rebounds, added 5 assists, and had 2 steals. Danny Fair (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) scored his second straight 20 point game and recorded his 4th double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Fair was the lone Regent to have a good shooting night going 9 for 15 from the floor and a perfect 2-2 at the free throw line. Dominique Walker (Chicago Ill./Morgan Park) scored 11 points, grabbed 2 rebounds, dished out 5 assists, and had 2 steals. The win improves Rockford to 10-10 on the season with a 7-5 record in the Northern Athletics Conference. Currently Rockford is in second place in the South Division and is only ½ game behind the division leader.
The men’s basketball team will return to the court on Tuesday January, 31st against the Dominican University Stars. The game will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. in the Seaver Center in Rockford, Ill. The Regents are 16-7 against Dominican all-time but only are only 4-5 against the Stars since joining the Northern Athletics Conference. However, the Regents have won the last three meetings in the series with the most recent being a 71-63 win on December 7, 2011 at Dominican.
