ROCKFORD, Ill. – For the Rockford College men’s basketball team it was another game that would be decided on the final play of the game. Last night the Regents played host to rival Aurora University at the Seaver Center. It was a tight game that saw 14 lead changes, 5 ties and was played within a 12 point range the entire night. The Spartans twice led by as many as 7 points with the first coming at the 12:23 mark in the first half, and the other coming at the 13:34 mark in the second half. Following the 7 point Spartan lead in the first half, the Regents went on a 13-1 run to take their first and largest lead of the evening at 28-23. Aurora would right answer back and take a 38-36 lead into the half. The second half shook out much the same was as the first half with neither team being able to take control of the game and put their opponent away. Over the final 3 minutes and 25 seconds neither team lead by more than 1 point. Both teams continued to trade baskets until with 11 seconds left Aurora made the final basket of the evening giving them a 1-point lead with 11 seconds remaining. Rockford was able to get a baseline jumper off with 3 seconds remaining but the attempt was blocked and fell short giving Aurora the 75-74 victory. It was poor free throw shooting that ultimately did the Regents in, as they shot under 50% at the free throw line going 10-21 in the 1-point loss.
On a tough shooting night for Rockford, the Regents got the majority of their offensive production from two players. Senior Dominique Walker (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) continued his torrid scoring streak for the Regents. Walker again set a new career best and recorded his first double-double at Rockford College scoring 27 points and collecting 11 rebounds. It was the fifth time this season and the third straight game that Walker has scored at least 20 points for Rockford. Junior forward Danny Fair (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) came within 2 rebounds of his forth double-double of the season. Fair scored 20 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, recorded one steal and added an assist. It was the junior’s third 20 point game of the season. The Regents managed to get up 11 more shots and outrebounded the Spartans by 14 despite the loss.
The Regents will be back in action on Saturday night at 8:15 p.m. when they travel to Watertown, Wis. to take on the Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders. Rockford College is 7-1 against the Maranatha and has won six straight meetings in the series.
