ROCKFORD, Ill. – Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams fell behind early in their games at home against the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons this past Saturday.  Neither team was able to get much going in the early minutes and fell behind by double figures less than 10 minutes into the game.  Each team fought back with the women’s team cutting the Falcon lead down to a single point while the men’s team was able to capture the lead towards the end of the first half and maintain it for a large portion of the second half.  However it was not meant to be as both teams fell to the visiting Falcons.

The men’s team continued its trend of playing in games that consist of large runs for each team.  The Falcons opened the game on a 23-8 run over the first 9 minutes of the game.  During that time span, Rockford had a difficult time getting anything going shooting 3-13 from the floor and turning the ball over 3 times.  The rest of the half was owned by the Regents, as they went on a 29-8 run on 12-21 shooting to take a 37-31 lead into the half.  With the exception of a 3 minute span about two-thirds of the way through the second half; the rest of the game was played within a 5-point range.  The Falcons recorded the final lead change of the afternoon near the 2 minute mark on a very deep 3-point basket.  They subsequently connected on two more 3-point plays to seal a 78-73 victory.  Guard Dominique Walker (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) continued his hot shooting scoring 21 points by connecting on 8 of his 16 shots including going 4-4 from the three throw line.  Walker rounded out his afternoon with 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.  Senior Alen McVeigh (Rockford, Ill./Jefferson) had a career shooting day for the Regents.  McVeigh was perfect on the afternoon going 4-4 from the floor and 2-2 from beyond the arc to score a career best 10 points.  Forward Danny Fair (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) had a big second half for the Regents scoring 11 of his 15 points in the final 20 minutes.  Senior Paul Hall (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) was close to a triple-double scoring 8 points, tying a season best with 7 rebounds and setting a career best at Rockford with 7 assists.

It was a similar story during the women’s for the Regents as it was during the men’s game.  The ladies found themselves behind 14-4 just about 7 minutes into the game.  They cut the lead down to just 1 point by going on a 9-0 run over the next 3 minutes.  The Falcons answered right back holding off the Regents’ surge and building its lead up to a game high 13 points at halftime.  The ladies continued to play hard cutting the lead down to just 6 points on multiple occasions during the second half, but that is as close as they would get falling 56-50 to Concordia University Wisconsin.  Senior Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) recorded her 6th double-double of the season scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.  She also dished out 3 assists, had one steal and blocked a shot.  Through January 19th, Curry ranks 11th in NCAA Division III women’s basketball in scoring with 323 points and is 14th in the nation averaging 20.2 points per game.  Dani Buttel (Pecatonica, Ill./Pecatonica) just missed her first double-double of the season for the Regents.  Buttel tied for the team high with 12 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, had 2 steals and recorded 1 assist in the game.  Nicole Olson (Shannon, Ill./Eastland) also scored 12 points, got 2 rebounds and had 1 steal.

Both basketball teams will return to the court early this week for conference play.  The women’s basketball team returns to action on Tuesday January 24th when they travel to River Forest, Ill. to play Concordia University Chicago at 7:00 p.m.  The men’s basketball team will host rival Aurora University on Wednesday January 25th at the Seaver Center at 7:00 p.m.
