ROCKFORD, Ill. – It was yet another exciting night at the Seaver Center on Tuesday night as the men’s basketball team welcomed in the South Division leading Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders. After a sluggish first half by both teams that consisted of 19 combined turnovers, a combined shooting percentage of 38.6% and MSOE leading 29-26 at halftime, things really begin to heat up in the second half. The Regents came out the locker room after halftime and looked like a completely different team than what they showed in the first half. After being down by as many as 8 points in the first half, the gritty men’s basketball team continued to fight and eventually tied the game at 33 with just less than 16 minutes remaining in the second half. Rockford then went on a 12-1 run over the next 5 minutes and 39 seconds to capture its largest lead of the evening at 45-34. The Raiders were not behind for long however, as they promptly went on a 17-6 run over the next 5 minutes and 4 seconds to once again tie the game at 51. The Regents proved to still have some fight and another run left in them as they scored 14 of the game’s final 18 points and to secure a hard fought 65-55 win. With the win, Rockford moves into first place in the South Division of the Northern Athletics Conference.
On a night where points were tough to come by, Rockford was able to get hot shooting and timely baskets from its starters as well as off the bench. Senior Paul Hall (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) was the team’s leading scorer for the second straight game and the third time this season. Hall poured in a season high 19 points, 12 of which came in the second half, while connecting on 6-7 shots including 3-4 from behind the arc and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Junior Taylor Dixon (Rockford, Ill./Lutheran) continued his solid all-around play scoring 8 points while connecting on 2-5 three-point attempts, grabbing 4 rebounds, dishing out 3 assists and recording 1 steal while playing in a season high 37 minutes. Rockford got excellent production out of both Darryl Watkins (Rockford, Ill./Auburn) and Keith Conway (Chicago, Ill./Hubbard) coming off of the bench. Watkins went 4-6 from the floor scoring 9 points, tied a season high with 5 rebounds and recorded 1 steal. Conway scored 10 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, recorded 1 assist and blocked a shot. For the game Rockford outrebounded MSOE by 16 including a 17-6 edge on offensive rebounds. The Regents connected on 3 more free throws and 3 more made three-point baskets than the Raiders helping lead to the victory.
The men’s basketball team will be back in action on Thursday January 19th when they travel to River Forest, Ill. to play Concordia University Chicago. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
