MADISON, Wis. – In a year filled with close games and last second shots, Saturday’s game against the Edgewood College Eagles was shaping up to be yet one that was going to be decided in the final seconds of play.  After leading for a total of 16 seconds in the first half, and being down by 10 points at two different occasions, the men’s basketball team continued to fight and chip away at the first place Eagles’ lead.  Each time the Regents cut the game down to a one possession game, Edgewood had an answer to put space between themselves and the Rockford.  With only 1 minute and 32 seconds left and Edgewood up 8 the Regents mounted one final charge to try and steal a win on the road.  Junior Grant Olsen (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) hit a quick jumper cutting the Eagles lead to 6 with 1:22 left in the game.  Rockford forced a missed shot on defense and got a quick jumper from senior Paul Hall (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) to cut deficit to only 4 with 1:05 remaining.  Solid defense once again forced a turnover by Edgewood leading to quick 3-point basket by Olsen putting the Regents down 61-60 with just 45 seconds left.  After another stop on the defensive end of the floor, Rockford got the ball back down 1 with only 12 seconds remaining.  However, thid is where the comeback would end as the Regents failed to connect on a last second baseline jumper as time expired falling 61-60.

So far this season the Regents have played good team basketball and got quality outings from a variety of different players, and Saturday was no exception.  Junior Taylor Dixon (Rockford, Ill./Lutheran) scored in double figures for the second time in the last two games for Rockford.  Dixon scored 11 points on 4-5 shooting including going 3-4 from behind the arc.  The junior also recorded 5 rebounds and an assist in the game.  Junior forward Danny Fair (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) just missed his forth double-double of the season scoring a team high 12 points, getting 8 rebounds, and recording 2 steals on Saturday.  Paul Hall also scored 12 points in the loss, handed out 3 assists and had 1 steal for the Regents.  While junior Grant Olsen only scored 7 points in Saturday’s matchup, 5 of those 7 points came in the final 1:22 of the game while the Regents were making their final charge.  Olsen also recorded 6 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block in the game for Rockford.  Despite getting outscored by 10 points at the free throw line and outrebounded by 10, the Regents kept themselves in the game by going 8-19 on 3-point attempts and holding the Eagles to just 35.2% shooting from the floor and 26.3% shooting from beyond the arc.

The men’s basketball team will be back in action Tuesday, January 17th when they host the South Division leading Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Seaver Center on the campus of Rockford College.
