ST. PAUL , Minn. – The Regents indoor track teams kicked off the new year with a trip up St. Paul, Minn. this past weekend to compete in the Bethel Open. It was a meet that featured Rockford College, Bethel University and St. Olaf College. This was the first action for both the men’s and women’s indoor track teams in 42 days since they opened their seasons on December 3rd, 2011 in Normal, Ill. Both teams had individuals improve upon their times and distances from the previous meet along with putting together strong performances this past Saturday.
The women’s team continues to be led by a very young and talented group of student-athletes. Sophomore Genesis Cerrato (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) finished 2nd out of 7 participants in the mile run. Her time of 5:46.72 was a season best and was less than 5 seconds behind the first place finisher from Bethel University. Freshman Stephanie Tassone (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) cut 0.16 seconds off of her 60 meter dash posting a time of 9.04 seconds which was good enough for a 3rd place finish. Tassone also competed in the 200 meter dash placing 4th with a time of 30.98 seconds and the triple jump finishing 2nd with a jump of 9.44 meters. Freshman Lindsay Maas (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) had a strong showing for Rockford in the 800 meter run. The freshman finished in 3rd place in a tight race where her time of 2:46.72 was less than 4 seconds behind the 1st place finisher.
The men also continued to show improved results from earlier in the season. Senior Bobby Tassone (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) was able to improve his season best time to 7.82 seconds placing him 4th in the 60 meter dash. It was a close race as the senior was less than a half a second behind the winner. Tassone also competed in the 200 meter dash placing 2nd with a time of 25.62 seconds. Freshman Carl Rapp (Union, Ill./Belvidere North) participated in the 800 meter run and posted the best finish of any Regent so far this year in that event. Rapp’s time of 2:10.15 was over a half second better than what he recorded earlier this year, and it gave him a 6th place finish out of 13 runners. Freshman Tim Lydy (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) competed in both the 1 mile and the 3,000 meter run. Lydy finished 9th in both events with times of 4:54.68 and 9:57.44 respectively.
Both the men’s and women’s indoor track teams will return to action on Saturday January 28th when they travel to Kenosha, Wis. to participate in the Tadd Metzger Invitational at Carthage College. The meet is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
