ROCKFORD, Ill. – After a tough loss this past Saturday it was important t for the Regents to bounce back in tonight’s game against a tough Benedictine University Eagles team. However, it did not start out well for the men’s basketball team. Early foul trouble and poor shooting allowed the Eagles to jump out to an early 8 point lead while holding Rockford to only 8 points in the first 8 minutes of the first half. Rockford continued to fight despite their early woes and went into the half only trailing 29-28. The second half started out the same way the first half did. After an early basket gave Rockford a 1-point lead, Benedictine again jumped out to a 42-34 lead early in the second half. Over the next nine minutes, the two teams fought back and forth as Rockford tied the game on several different occasions only to see Benedictine answer right back to retake the lead. However, the tide began to turn at the 7:49 mark in the second half. With the game tied at 57, the Regents went on a 14-2 run over the next 3 minutes and 31 seconds to ice the game away. Solid defense and a 12 rebound advantage for Rockford helped seal the 77-65 victory.
In the absence of its leading scorer, Rockford College saw numerous players rise to the occasion to fill the void. The Regents were lead again by senior guard Dominique Walker (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park). Walker was the leading scorer in the game pouring in career best 21 points at Rockford College and grabbing 9 rebounds for the Regents. The senior scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and shot 50 percent from the floor for the game. Danny Fair (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) overcame early foul trouble that limited him to just 3 minutes in the first half. The junior had a monster second half scoring all 16 of his points and getting 7 of his 9 rebounds in the final 20 minutes of the game. Forward Keith Conway (Chicago, Ill./Hubbard) kept the Regents in the game early scoring 11 of his season high 12 points in the first half. The junior also finished the game grabbing a season best 7 rebounds and committed zero turnovers in the game. Senior Paul Hall (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) gave Rockford a great all-around game. Hall scored 11 points, got 6 rebounds, dished out 5 assists, and recorded a steal. The senior gave the Regents a huge boost in the second half connecting on back-to-back-to-back 3-point baskets when Rockford trailed by 8 points. For the game, the Regents shot 49.1 percent from the floor and turned the ball over a season low 9 times helping to secure the win.
