ROCKFORD, Ill. – Despite falling behind by double figures multiple times to the Lakeland College Muskies in the first half of Saturday’s game, the Regents women’s basketball team continued to fight back throughout the afternoon.  Rockford fell behind by 10 points less than 8 minutes into the game, but the team battled back to cut the Muskie lead down to only 3 with just over 4 minutes remaining in the first half on a jumper by senior guard Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville).  Lakeland promptly went on a 7-0 run to increase its lead back up to double-digits and entered halftime up 40-33.  The Regents stormed out of halftime going on 15-7 run to take its first lead of the game at 48-47 on a layup by Dani Buttel (Pecatonica, Ill./Pecatonica).  The Muskies answered quickly taking the lead back from the Regents 41 seconds later and built their lead back up to 6 points.  The resilient Regents showed no signs of quitting as they fought back to tie the game with 4 minutes remaining at 68-68 on a pair of free throws by Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein).  However, that would be as close as the Regents would get as Lakeland got hot shooting the ball over the last four minutes going 4-7 from the floor and making all 8 of their free throws.

Despite the 84-75 loss, the Regents saw career best performances from two of its starters.  Sophomore Jessica Bjerning set career highs in both points and rebounds in Saturday’s game.  The sophomore scored 13 points and got 10 rebounds in route to her first double-double in a Regents uniform.  Dani Buttel also set a career high in points on Saturday.  The senior forward scored 16 points going 7-9 from the floor and a perfect 2-2 at the free throw line.

Senior guard Britney Curry continues to move up the Rockford College scoring list with her stellar season.  Curry had her 9th 20-point game of the season pouring in 28 points on Saturday.  The senior is now the 3rd leading scorer in Rockford College history with 1,385 points.  She is only 200 points behind Heidi Burkhart who finished her career in 2002 with 1,585 points as the 2nd leading scorer in school history.  In addition, Curry is now tied for 8th in school history with 559 rebounds.  Curry is also 5th in both steals (201) and blocked shots (61).  The senior is only 1 steal and 2 blocks away from moving into a 4th place tie in each category respectively.

The women’s basketball team will be back in action at home on Tuesday January 10th against MSOE.  Start time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Seaver Center in Rockford, Ill.
