Defense and Rebounding Lead Regents to Win

DUBUQUE, Iowa - After losing its last three games by a combined nine points, including a loss on a half court buzzer beater, the Regents Men’s Basketball team took care of business defeating the Culver-Stockton College Wildcats 70-52 Saturday evening. Saturday’s win was all about defense for Rockford College. In the game the Regents set or tied numerous season bests on the defense end of the floor. The Regents tied a season low holding its opponent to only 52 points in the game. The Rockford College defense smothered the Wildcats holding them to only 35.6% shooting from the floor. The Wildcats also only attempted 11 free throws and making just 4. All three were season best’s for the Regent defense. Rebounding was also a key factor in the win, limiting Culver-Stockton to only 5 second chance points. Rockford College outrebounded the Wildcats 53-34 including grabbing 17 offensive rebounds. With the win Rockford improves to 6-6 on the season and remains in a first place tie in the South Division of the Northern Athletics Conference with a 3-1 conference record.
The Regents saw the majority of their offense come from three players in Friday’s victory. Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower), who led the team with 23 points on Thursday night, scored 17 points got 7 rebounds and 2 steals against the Wildcats. For his stellar effort Minnifield was named to the University of Dubuque Holiday Tournament All-Tournament Team. Junior forward Danny Fair (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) continued his impressive play in his first season in a Regents uniform. Fair recorded his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds. He also added an assist and came up with a steal in the game as well. Senior Dominique Walker (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) has provided Rockford with a scoring spark off the bench for most of the season and tonight was no exception. Walker scored 13 points on only 7 shot attempts, got 4 rebounds, dished out an assist, and recorded a steal in only 19 minutes.
The men’s basketball team will return to action at home against Lakeland College on January 7th 2012. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. at the Seaver Center in Rockford, Ill.
