ROCKFORD, Ill. – In a game that saw 11 lead changes and 9 ties, the Regents men’s basketball team came up just short in the closing seconds. Neither team was able to build more than a 6-point lead in the first half as game went back and forth as each team exchanged runs. The largest lead of the game for either team came less than 2 minutes into the second half when St. Francis hit a 3-point shot to go up 46-36. Rockford answered right back with a 14-1 run over the next 5:42 to take a 50-47 lead. The Regents continued to build on their lead extending it to a game-high 8 points with 4:58 seconds left in the second half. However, the Fighting Saints of the University of St. Francis went on an 11-2 run of their own to take a 1-point lead. The game went back and forth in the closing minutes with St. Francis tying the game at the line with 15 seconds remaining. The Regents were unable to score on their final possession giving the ball back to the St. Francis with 3.3 seconds remaining. The Fighting Saints got the ball inbounds and banked in a half court shot from the sideline as time expired to defeat Rockford 78-75. The loss drops the Regents men’s basketball team falls to 5-4 on the year, but they still remain in a first place tie for the South Division in the Northern Athletics Conference.
The Regents battled foul trouble all game long but were still able to be aggressive on the offensive end of the floor. Senior guard Dominique Walker (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) gave Rockford the boost it needed off of the bench. Walker scored a season high 20 points on Saturday. He went 8-12 from the floor for the game and scored 11 of the team’s 13 points in the final 6:35 of the first half. Junior guard Danny Fair (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) battled foul trouble all game long but was still able to record his second double-double of the year. Fair scored 12 points and a game high 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) continued his impressive scoring streak by scoring at least 15 points for the fourth consecutive game. Minnifield scored 15 points, 8 rebounds and a steal for the Regents. Junior transfer Grant Olsen (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) had a nice game as well , scoring 12 points with an assist and a steal. For the afternoon, the Regents outrebounded the bigger Fighting Saints 32-25, shot 56% from the floor, and 53% from the 3-point line. However, St. Francis made more free throws, 13, than Rockford attempted 10.
The men’s basketball team will return to the court on Thursday December 22nd when they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to face Coe College. Tip-off is at 3:00 p.m.
