NORMAL, Ill. – The 2011-2012 men’s and women’s indoor track seasons got underway with an early trip down to Normal, Ill. where the teams participated in the Illinois State Redbird Open. The meet was made up of mostly NCAA Division I institutions with just a couple of Division III schools participating including Rockford College. Competing against Division I schools provided the Regents with a good early season test against some top-notch competition.
Despite the meet being over a month earlier then all the other meets on the team’s schedule and only practicing for a limited amount of time prior to the meet, the Regents still turned out some impressive individual performances. On the men’s side freshman Philip Pressgrove (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill) had the best finish of any Regent finishing 7th out of 23 runners in the 400 meter dash. The freshman finished with a time of 53.57 seconds which currently is tied for the 87th best overall 400 meter time in all of Division III. Carl Rapp (Union, Ill./Belvidere North) competed in both the 1 mile and 800 meter events. The freshman finished 8th in the 1 mile event with a time of 4:47.25 and 11th in the 800 meter race posting a time of 2:10.66. On the women’s side, sophomore Genesis Cerato (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) broke the Rockford College record in the 3k. Cerrato’s time of 11:09.53 destroyed the previous record by nearly 2 minutes. Freshman Stephanie Tassone (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) also broke a school record at the Redbird Open. Tassone set the Rockford College triple jump record with a distance of 9.89.
After over a month between meets, the Rockford College indoor track teams will be back in action on Saturday January 14th when they travel to the Bethel Open in St. Paul, Minn. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
