MILWAUKEE, Wis. – In Saturday’s game at Wisconsin Lutheran, the Rockford College men’s basketball team was literally hitting on all cylinders. The Regents stormed out of the gates connecting on 6 of their first 8 shot attempts and leading 12-5 less than 5 minutes into the game. Rockford led for nearly the entire game, with Wisconsin Lutheran’s only lead of the game coming with 10:43 seconds remaining in the first half and lasting for only 51 seconds. The game remained close for much of the first half with neither team able to build a double digit lead. The Warriors scored 5 of the last 6 points before the half tying the game at 41 at halftime. The Regents continued their hot shooting in the second half opening up on a 23-5 run putting Rockford up by 18 points. The Warriors were never able to get any closer than 8 points for the remainder of the game as Rockford cruised to an 88-80 victory. For the game the Regents scorched the nets shooting an astounding 64% from the field hitting on 32 of their 50 shot attempts. It was by far Rockford’s best shooting performance of the season eclipsing the previous season high of 52.4% shooting a week early against Marian University. Rockford has now defeated Wisconsin Lutheran in consecutive meetings for the first time since joining the Northern Athletics Conference back in the fall of 2006.
Rockford College saw over half of its scoring come from just two players. Sophomore Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) was the team’s leading scorer for the 3rd consecutive game. Minnifield punished the Warriors scoring a game-high 24 points on 9 of 12 shooting from the floor and grabbing a team-high 8 rebounds as well. The sophomore has now scored at least 24 points in 3 consecutive games, all Rockford wins. Junior Danny Fair (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) was the other half of Rockford’s one-two punch on Saturday afternoon. Fair scored his 23 points on 9 of 14 shooting for the game. Fair was also very effective on the defensive end of the floor coming up with 2 steals and blocking 2 Wisconsin Lutheran shot attempts. Point guards Paul Hall (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) and Thomas Hawkings (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) each did an excellent job getting teammates involved in the game. The two combined to dish out 12 assists while only committing 5 turnovers. On the defensive end o f the court, the pair was able to come up with 4 of the team’s 7 steals. The Regents’ win over Wisconsin Lutheran College improves their conference record to 3-1 and keeps them in first place in the South Division of the Northern Athletics Conference.
The men’s basketball team will be back in action next Saturday, December 17th at home against the University of St. Francis. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Seaver Center in Rockford, Ill.
