ROCKFORD, Ill. – Senior kicker and punter Anthony Beres (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) has been selected to play in the third annual Tazón de Estrellas game in Puebla, Mexico. The matchup will feature the Stars & Stripes Team which is made up of NCAA Division III all-stars from across the United States. Team Stars and Stripes will take on the CONADEIP all-stars from Mexico. Prior to the game being renamed the Tazón de Estrallas, it was known as the Aztec Bowl. In the final 11 meeting before being renamed, the United States was 10-1 against Mexico. Since the rebranding, the United States team has split the first two meetings with Mexico winning last year 48-7 and losing in 2009 24-12. Beres is the only player from the Northern Athletics Conference to participate in the all-star game this year, and he is also the first player from Rockford College to take part in the international matchup.
Team Stars and Stripes consists of just over 50 players from 28 Division III colleges and university across the country. "It will be exciting to play on an All-Star Team with some of the top talent from across the country” Beres commented. "It will be great to meet everyone and get out there to play in one final game in my career. I am really looking forward to not only playing in the game but also representing the United States in the matchup as well. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to represent your country in anything you do, and I feel fortunate to be selected to participate in the game.”
Over the years the Aztec Bowl and Team Stars and Stripes has seen some of its standout players go on to successful careers in the National Football League. Current Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson, Washington Redskins linebacker London Fletcher, and Miami Dolphins linebacker Jason Trusnik all made their mark playing in the Aztec Bowl.
Beres, a 4-year player for the Regents, has had an impressive career at Rockford College culminating with a stellar senior season. Beres was twice selected as Northern Athletics Conference Special Teams Student-Athlete of the Week as a senior. In doing so, he became the First Regent football player to ever win the award in consecutive weeks and multiple times in a career. He was also named Second Team All-Northern Athletics Conference this season by the coaches. During his career Beres broke 3 Rockford College kicking records as well. Back in 2010 he broke the single-season record for punts with 78. He also broke the record for longest punt with a 75-yard punt that season. Over his 4-year career Beres punted the ball a Rockford College record 226 times.
The game will be played at El Temp del Dolor in Puebla, Mexico on December 17, 2011. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The game will broadcast via a live webcast at www.GlobalFootball.com.
