ROCKFORD, Ill. – It just seems like it is going to be one of those seasons where every game comes down to the final seconds, and Saturday’s game against the Marian University Sabres was no exception. Rockford lead for the majority of the first half and used a 17-4 run to build its lead to as many as 13 points with just over 4 minutes left before halftime. However, the resilient Sabres would not go away. Marian would answer with a 15-7 run of its own to close out the first half and cut Rockford’s lead to 47-42 at the half. After Marian had cut the lead down to 1 point on several different occasions early in the second half, Rockford went on 12-2 run to again go back up by double figures. However, just like in the first half, Marian University answered back taking a 1-point lead with just over 3 minutes remaining in the game. With the game tied up at 84 and only 15 seconds remaining the Regents turned to their hot hand in the second half. Sophomore Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) was fouled while shooting with 2.6 seconds remaining in the game and stepped to the line to attempt two free throws. After missing the first, Minnifield calming stepped back up to the line and sank the second, giving Rockford a one point lead. Marian University was unable to get off a shot before time expired giving Rockford College an 85-84 victory. The Regents have now defeated the Sabres in 6 straight meetings.
Rockford College saw four players score in double digits in Saturday’s victory. The Regents were led on the court by sophomore Tory Minnifield. The sophomore scored 20 of his season high 27 points in the second half and none more important than the game winning free throw with less than 3 seconds remaining in the game. Minnifield also nearly missed his second double-double of the season grabbing 9 rebounds. Junior Danny Fair (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) was a force on the court for the second straight game. Coming off of a season high 27 points on Tuesday, Fair recorded his first double-double of the year scoring 19 points and getting 11 rebounds. Senior guard Darryl Watkins (Rockford, Ill./Auburn) gave Rockford a much needed spark offensively off the bench. Watkins scored 12 points and hit on 2 of his 4 three-point attempts. Junior transfer Grant Olsen (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) played a solid all-around game on Saturday. Olsen scored 11 points, got 6 rebounds, dished out 2 assists and had 4 steals. For the game Rockford shot 52.4% from the floor and made 8-16 three-point shot attempts.
The men’s basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday December 7th when they travel to River Forest, Ill. to play the Dominican University Stars. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
