ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The 2011 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional is always known for its great teams and tough competition.  This year was no different as the Rockford College cross country teams competed against some of the best competition in the country.  The Midwest Regional which is typical one of the better regionals in the country, if not the best regional, once again lived up to its billing again this year.  On the men’s side, three of the top five finishing teams at the NCAA Championships, including 2011 National Champion North Central College, competed in the Midwest Regional.  On the women’s side the 2011 National Champion, Washington University (Mo.), also came out of the Midwest Regional.

This year’s regional took place at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois.  The course which is mostly flat with few variations in elevation combined with perfect weather conditions placed the Running Regents in a position to break school records and set new personal bests, which is exactly what they did.  Sophomore Genesis Cerrato (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) finished 40th out of 264 runners with a time of 23:12.9.  It was a new personal best for the sophomore and the best finish any Regent has ever had at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional.  Cerrato narrowly missed qualifying for nationals as she was approximately 22 seconds behind the final qualifying spot.  Sophomore Barbara Duffy (Tampico, Ill./Prophetstown) also set a personal best at the Midwest Regional.  Duffy recorded a time of 25:15.8 and finished 143rd in her first regional appearance.  The women’s team placed 29th out of 38 teams.  On the men’s side, freshman Tim Lydy (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) was the Regents top finisher.  Lydy finished 164th out of 277 runners, running to a time of 28:15.5.  In his last race, senior Tyler Mendenhall (Prophetstown, Ill./Prophetstown) finished 2 spots behind Lydy finishing 166th with a time of 28:17.4.  The men’s team placed 34th out of 39 teams.

The Regents look to set up to build towards an even stronger showing next season.  The women’s team had no seniors on the roster this year, and on the men’s team only one of the team's top five finishers was a senior.
