AURORA, Ill. – Despite a slow start and falling behind by 19 points in the second half to Aurora University, the Rockford College women’s basketball team simply would not give up. Wednesday’s game was truly a game of two completely different halves. In the first half the Regents committed 16 turnovers, gave up 8 three-point baskets, and trailed at the half 40-25. However, trailing by 19 with 17:51 remaining in the second half things began to turn around for the Regents. Over the next 15 minutes, Rockford went on a 27-7 run to take its first lead of the game with 2:57 left in regulation. It turned out to be a lead the Regents would not surrender defeating Aurora 63-58. Rockford was able to make its run in the second half in large part due to its defense in the second half. The Regents held Aurora to 18.2% shooting from the floor in the second half, forcing 10 turnovers, and outrebounding the Spartans by 12. Consequently, Rockford was able to get good looks at the basket making 4 three-point baskets, connecting on 5 more free throws and outscoring the Spartans by 20 points. Rockford College has now defeated Aurora University in 4 consecutive meetings.
The Regents needed to get outstanding performances from all of their players in the second half in order to cap off the comeback victory. Senior guard Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) got the team started scoring 11 of the Regents first 20 points during their second half surge. After being held scoreless in the first half, Curry found her rhythm driving to the basket for layups and connecting on critical free throws in the second half. She finished the game recording her third double-double of the season scoring 13 points with 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots. Fellow senior guard Nicole Olson (Shannon, Ill./Eastland) caught fire from beyond the arc in the second half making 4 of 5 three-point attempts. She finished the game scoring a season high 18 points. Olson’s hot shooting helped to open up the interior for her teammates. Junior forward Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) narrowly missed her third double-double of the season scoring 10 points while grabbing 9 rebounds. Forwards Dani Buttel (Pecatonica, Ill/Pecatonica) and Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) controlled the glass under the basket getting 12 and 8 rebounds respectively. Bjerning also added 8 points and 2 assists as well.
On top of the victory over rival Aurora University, Regents fans were also able to witness a career milestone and special moment in Rockford College women’s basketball history. With 10:53 remaining in the first half senior guard Britney Curry got her forth rebound of the evening and 500th rebound in her collegiate career. Curry becomes the 10 women’s basketball player in school history to record 500 rebounds. She is also only the 7th member of the exclusive 1,000 point club and 500 rebound club into the program’s 40th year of existence.
The women’s basketball team will be back in action at the Seaver Center on Saturday as a part of an afternoon doubleheader with the men’s basketball team against Marian University. The ladies will tip-off at 2:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 4:15 p.m.
