Women's Basketball Notches Victory over Blackburn

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Rockford College women’s basketball team got its first win of the 2011-12 season on Saturday with a decisive win over the Blackburn College Beavers at the North Central College Tip-Off Tournament. The Regents were in control for most of the game on Saturday afternoon. Rockford only trailed for 1 minute and 39 seconds in the entire game. The game went back and forth in the opening minutes with neither team being able to build much of a lead. With about 11 minutes remaining before halftime, Rockford went on a 16-4 run to close out the first half and enter halftime with a 15-point lead. The second half went back and forth and the Regents never lead by less than 13-points and defeated the Beavers 62-41.
The Regents were lead by 4 familiar faces on Saturday. Senior Britney Curry (Merillville, Ind./Merillville) continues to show why she is one of the best players on the court each and every game she plays in. Curry scored a game high 21 points against Blackburn. She also grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Curry was named to the North Central College Tip-Off Tournament All-Tournament team for her performance over the weekend. The senior scored 42 points, got 15 rebounds, and handed out 6 assists in the two games. Junior Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) continued her stellar play this season as well. Lawler recorded her second straight double-double on the season with 12 points and a game high 10 rebounds including 4 tough offensive rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) scored 11 points and got 7 rebounds for the Regents. Senior Nicole Olsen (Shannon, Ill./Eastland) also scored in double figures with 12 points including making the both of the Regents 3-point baskets in the game.
The ladies will return to action on Saturday November 26th when the begin conference play against the Concordia University Chicago Cougars. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Seaver Center.
