ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College Men’s Soccer team will wrap up its season with a trip to Evanston, Ill. to face the Northwestern University Wildcats on Thursday October 27th at 6:00 p.m. The match will be played under the lights at Lakeside Field located right next to Lake Michigan.
Northwestern University is a charter member of the Big Ten Conference and is currently in first place with a 3-0-1 record in conference. The Wildcats have reached the NCAA Tournament 5 of the last 8 seasons including NCAA Elite Eight appearances in 2006 and 2008. This will be the first time the two schools have met.
"We are excited at the opportunity to play a Big Ten team.” Rockford College Head Coach Ben Shaw commented. "How many Division III players can say they played against a Big Ten school during their collegiate careers? This will be a great memory for them to look back on ten years down the road, and hopefully be able to say we were able to provide them with the best college soccer experience possible.”
Seniors Matt Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) and Matt Saelens (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) will be playing in their final soccer match of their collegiate careers at Northwestern University. "It’s a great opportunity us to be able to play against Division I players.” Nicholson stated. "It will be an exciting way for us to close out our season.”
The Regents opened up the 2011 season with a 3-2 victory at home against Saint Mary’s University. It marked the first time since 2001 that Rockford had won its season opener.
Rockford will look to build on the successes of this season and take with them the experience of playing a top-tier Big Ten opponent as it moves into the off-season.
