ROCKFORD, Ill. – For the third time this season Rockford College sophomore Genesis Cerrato (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) was recognized by the Northern Athletics Conference for her performance over the weekend. On Monday night, Cerrato was named NAC Women’s Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 16th, 2011. Cerrato has now won the award more times than any other Rockford College student-athlete so far this school year.
Over the weekend Cerrato continued her strong year of competition with arguably her best outing of the season when she competed at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational in Winneconne Wis. This was a unique opportunity for the sophomore as it is also the course where the NCAA Division III cross country national championships will be held later this year. It was a very large race with a lot of strong competition. There were a total of 43 teams and 395 runners at the race. Cerrato set a new personal best in the 6k with a time of 23:33.87. She finished the race 96th overall and was the top Northern Athletics Conference finisher in the event. In addition, her time was a new Regents sophomore record and the 2nd best time ever for a female cross country runner at Rockford College. Cerrato also broke the course record for a Regent runner by over a minute.
Cerrato continues to show that she is one of the best runners in the conference with times at or near the top in each of the different length races. Her time of 23:33.87 in the 6k on Saturday is currently the best time of any female student-athlete in the Northern Athletics Conference. She also currently holds the second best time in the NAC in both the 4k and 5k events with times of 16:41 and 19:57.0 respectively.
The Regents Women’s Cross Country team will return to action on Saturday October 29th at the Northern Athletics Conference Championships in Kenosha, Wis. The race is set to begin at 11:00 AM.
