ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College men’s soccer team found its way back into the victory column with its 3-1 win over the MacMurray College Highlanders on Thursday afternoon.  The Regents were able to take an early 1-0 lead with a little help from Highlanders, as they as they scored an own goal about midway through the first half.  As the Highlanders were trying to clear the ball in front of their own net, one of the defenseman kicked the ball past his keeper and scored a goal for the Regents.  The Highlanders made amends shortly thereafter tying the game at 1 goal apiece.  The Regents answered right back with a goal of their own giving them a 2-1 lead, which they would take into halftime.  The second half got a little rough with some hard fouls and a total of 4 yellow cards given out by the center official.  Rockford, known for its physical play, used this to their advantage and put the game away with an early second half goal giving the Regents a 3-1 victory.

The Regents got both solid performances and great leadership from both its upperclassmen and freshman throughout the match.  Senior Matt Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) directed traffic for Rockford College throughout the entire match.  Nicholson was involved on both goals scored by Regents players.  The senior notched his team leading 2nd and 3rd assists of the year for the Regents.  Philip Pressgrove (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mill) continued to build on what already has been an outstanding season for the freshman.  Pressgrove scored what turned out to be his conference leading 3rd game winning goal of the season giving his team a 2-1 lead late in the first half.  On the season, Pressgrove is tied for the lead in the NAC with 8 goals and is also tied for 4th in the NAC with 17 points.  Rockford got a boost off the bench from freshman Andres Guerrero (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) who scored his first collegiate goal sealing the 3-1 win for Rockford College.

The Rockford College men’s soccer team will be back in action at home on Wednesday October 19th at 1:00 p.m. against Dominican University.  Please join us on Wednesday as it will be senior day and we will be honoring the senior class of 2011.
