MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Rockford College volleyball team won two hard fought matches early Saturday in Milwaukee, Wis.  The Regents opened up Saturday morning with a Northern Athletics Conference match against the MSOE Raiders.  Rockford fell behind the Raiders early 2 sets to 1; however, Rockford continued to fight winning the 4th set and forcing a 5th and final set.  The Regents and Raiders went back and forth in the set until Rockford was able to win the set 16-14 thus taking the opening match 3 sets to 2.  The win improved Rockford’s record to 4-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference and kept the Regents right in the thick of the playoff race.

After the win against MSOE, Rockford played a nonconference match against Mt. Mary College.  Again Rockford got off to a slow start falling behind Mt. Mary 2 sets to none.  Similar to what had happened earlier in the day, the ladies did not give up.  They continued to fight and claw their way back into the match winning the next two sets and again forcing a 5th and deciding set.  They carried the momentum they had built in winning sets 3 and 4 and jumped all over Mt. Mary closing out the match with a 15-8 win in the 5th set.  The Regents took the match 3 games to 2, capping off a 2-0 day in Milwaukee, Wis.

The 2-0 day was largely the result of a complete team effort on Saturday.  Senior Courtney Pehl (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) once again did an excellent job getting her teammates involved.  Pehl recorded 94 assists, 21 digs and 10 kills on the day to lead the Regents.  Junior Nicole Lawler (Pearl, City, Ill./Pearl City) had an outstanding game at the net for Rockford.  Lawler had a team high 34 kills to go along with 5 total blocks and 40 digs.  Heather Goodrich (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew) finished the day with 27 kills and 5 total blocks for Rockford.  Freshman Laina Scheri (Cortland, Ill./DeKalb) continued her torrid steak hammering home 31 kills, 5 total blocks, and 36 digs.  Katy Atkerson (Serena, Ill./Serena), Heather Hyland (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) and Stephanie Tassone (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) did a great job on the back line with 15, 32, and 29 digs respectively on the day.

The Regents volleyball team will be back in action on Wednesday October 12th against the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors.  The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM in the Seaver Center.
