ROCKFORD, Ill. – Rockford College Sophomore Genesis Cerrato (Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) was recognized by the Northern Athletics Conference for her outstanding performance at the Falcon Invitational over the weekend. On Monday, Cerrato was named NAC Women’s Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 18, 2011. Cerrato is the first Rockford College Women’s Cross Country runner to ever receive the award from the Northern Athletics Conference.
The Regents Women’s Cross Country team has participated in three meets so far this fall, and Cerrato has led the way each time. This past weekend she competed against a combination of Division I and Division III runners. Out of 138 runners, Cerrato finished 9th overall at the meet and 3rd amongst Division III student-athletes. Her time of 24:12.9 in the 6k was the best time in the event for any runner in the Northern Athletics Conference. In addition, it is the 3rd best time run by women’s cross country student-athlete in Rockford College history, and it is the best time by a female sophomore runner in school history. Cerrato broke the old women’s sophomore mark by over 35 seconds.
Currently Cerrato holds the best 6k time run in the conference this fall. Her time this past weekend of 24:12.9 is a full 18 seconds faster than the person who currently holds the second best time in the Northern Athletics Conference.
The Regents Women’s Cross Country team will return to action this Saturday when they participate in the Lake Forest College Forester Invitational. The women’s race is set to begin at 10:00 AM.
