Volleyball Outlasts Spartans in Five-Set Win

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College volleyball team improved its record to 2-2 this season on Tuesday night when they defeated the Aurora University Spartans in an exciting 5-set match.  It was a back and forth match all night long with the Regents winning the 1st and 3rd sets, and the Spartans answering each time with wins in the 2nd and 4th sets pushing the match to a 5th and decisive set.  Rockford jumped out to an early lead in the 5th set and never looked back winning the set 15-9.  The win over rival Aurora improves Rockford’s record to 4-2 against the Spartans since both schools joined the Northern Athletics Conference back in 2006 in the conference’s inaugural season.

The Regents got stellar performances out of a handful of players in last night’s match.  Senior Courtney Pehl (Freeport, Ill./ Freeport) led the team with 49 assists ,6 aces, and tied for the team lead with 11 digs.  She continually set up her teammates in good positions to attack the ball at the net.  Junior Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) took full advantage and had 16 kills with only 2 attack errors on 31 attack attempts.  Lawler also tied for the team high will 11 digs in the match.  Senior Heather Goodrich (Tinley Park, Ill./ Victor J. Andrew) provided the Regents with outstanding net play throughout the match.  Goodrich had 13 kills with just 3 attack errors on 31 attack attempts.  In addition, she recorded 2 solo blocks and 1 block assist.  

The volleyball team will look to continues its winning ways when they travel to Watertown, Wis. to play Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Thursday September 15.  The match is set to start at 7:00 PM.
