ROCKFORD, Ill. – Rockford College Senior Anthony Beres (Hoffman Estates, Ill./ Hoffman Estates) was recognized by the Northern Athletics Conference for his special performance on the football field this past weekend. On Monday, Beres was named NAC Special Teams Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 11, 2011. Beres is only the second Regent to ever receive the award for football, and the first ever to receive it for a performance on Special Teams.
The Regents Football Team started off the season with two straight road contests and has continued to improve its performance each week. Beres has been a key contributing factor with his ability to pin the opponent deep in its own territory. Last Saturday he averaged 42.5 yards per punt with a long of 58. He was able to pin the opponent inside the 20 on 3 of his 6 punts including one punt that was downed at the 2-yard line. Beres has also been very reliable on converting extra points and field goals this season. Against Loras this past Saturday, he was 1-1 on field goal attempts and 2-2 on PAT conversions. For the season he is a perfect 2-2 on field goals and 5-5 on extra points. In addition, Beres showed off his passing ability as he completed a 16 yard pass for a first down off a fake punt on a drive that eventually ended in points for Rockford.
Currently Beres ranks at or near the top of the Northern Athletics Conference in multiple categories. He leads the conference in field goals made with 2, punts inside the 20-yard line with 5, and is tied for the lead in kicking points scored with 11. Beres is also second in the NAC with a 37.8 yard average per punt.
The Regents will have their home opener on Saturday when they welcome the Alma College Scots to campus. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Sam Greeley Field.
