Nicholson Leads Regents to Victory

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College Men’s Soccer team defeated Eureka College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon improving its record to 2-2 on the season . Rockford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and carried t he lead into the half. Eureka answered early in the second half with a quick goal to tie the game at 1. The score remained tied until the 65th minute when the Regents broke the tie and scored what turned out to be the game winning goal. Less than 4 minutes later Rockford scored an insurance goal and sealed the 3-1 win.
The Regents were led by the outstanding performance of senior Matt Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./ Stillman Valley). Nicholson got Rockford on the board early in the game scoring the first goal of the game in the 25th minute after a Red Devil foul. In the second half, Nicholson dribbled and weaved through multiple defenders until he was one on one with the goalie and beat him with a shot in the right side of the goal breaking the 1-1 tie. Freshman Philip Pressgrove (Peachtree City, Ga./ Starrs Mill) scored his 4th goal of the year and put the game out of reach in the 69th minute giving the Regents their second win of the season.
The men’s soccer team will be back in action on the road tomorrow, Sunday September 11th, at 4:00PM in Galesburg Ill. against the Knox College Prairie Fire.
