ROCKFORD Ill. – The Rockford College Men’s Soccer team opened its season up with an impressive 3-2 victory over the Cardinals of Saint Mary’s University (Minn.). The Regents fell behind early as the Cardinals scored a goal less than 6 minutes into the match. However, Rockford answered quickly scoring three unanswered goals during the next eleven minutes of the match. The Regents took the 3-1 lead into the half and never looked back. Saint Mary’s University tallied a late goal cutting the lead down to one, but that would be as close as the Cardinals got as Rockford’s stifling defense preserved the 3-2 victory. The win marks the first time since they defeated Millsaps College in their season opener 2001 that the Regents have won their opening match of the season.
Rockford was led on the field with an impressive performance by freshman Philip Pressgrove (Peachtree City, Ga./Starrs Mills). Pressgrove scored five points in the match including two goals and one assist. He tied the game with a goal in the sixteenth minute of the match off a great pass from Nathan Weir (Greenfield Ind./Central). Less than five minutes later Rockford took the lead, which they would not relinquish, on goal from senior Bronson Garcia (Rockford, Ill./Derby). Pressgrove added an insurance goal six minutes later off a nice pass from senior Matt Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley).
The Regents Men’s Soccer team is back in action tomorrow, Sunday September 4th, against Lake Forest College. The match is set to begin at 1:00 PM at Sam Greeley Field on the campus of Rockford College.
