Rockford, Ill., — The Center for Early Literacy Learning (CELL) will open on Friday, August 26, 2011.  The center is located at Rockford College on the first floor of the Howard Colman library. Mrs. Fran Castrogiovanni, a 1941 graduate of Rockford College and retired educator will read a story to mark the center’s opening at 10:30 a.m.  CELL is dedicated to future teachers of young children with interest in children’s literature and early reading. Emphasis of the center will concentrate on literary selections appropriate for young children, reading techniques and the use of technology in working with children under 8 years of age.

The center was made possible through the generous long-term contribution of Mrs. Carol Halderson, a retired children’s librarian and alumnae (BA 1963 and MAT 1965). The Howard Colman library established the core components for the Center for Early Learning Literacy (CELL) working with the department of education/early childhood/reading and the director of the library at the college. The center includes a Smart table, child-size furniture and children’s literature suitable for birth through age 8.

CELL is open for public use during normal business hours, M – F, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information, contact Marcia Blascoe, Assistant Professor of Education at 815-226-4096.
