Rockford College and Keith Country Day School share a long history
A message from college president Robert L. Head, Ph.D.

Dear students, faculty and staff:

Last Thursday, I provided the commencement address for Keith Country Day School. The event was held at Rockford College and represented another convergence of our two institutions. Keith was founded in 1916 by Belle Emerson Keith, who believed that education should be "a living, growing thing, not hampered by too much formula or formalism.” With their 32 graduates all attending college next fall and with their many accomplishments, it is clear that the formula Keith is following is a successful one. By the way, Mrs. Keith was the great-aunt of Georganne Eggers, a Rockford College trustee emeritus.

The connection between our two institutions became formal in 1944 when the facilities of Keith Country Day School were offered to Rockford College to be used for the development of a teacher-training program at the elementary level. Rockford College assumed complete charge of Keith and the Board of Trustees established a special committee to deal with the affairs of Keith. Records in our archives describe interviews of teaching candidates and the approval of curriculum changes from that era. In 1962, the Keith Trustees regained the title and control for the North Second Street campus from Rockford College for the sum of $64,122, which was the amount owed to the College.

Today, Keith School and Rockford College continue a collaborative relationship and continue to serve the Rockford community with high quality educational and community outreach programs.

May Board Meeting Update:
During its May meeting, the Rockford College Board of Trustees elected officers for the upcoming year. Those who will serve are David R. Rydell, Chair; Charles L. Colman, Vice Chair; Barbara R. Tanaglia, Secretary; and R. Ray Wood, Treasurer. Marci K. Jumisko was elected as a regular member of the board after serving a term as alumni trustee.  Members whose terms were renewed are Dawn R. Hallsten, Teresa J. Ingrassia, James G. Peterson, Sunil Puri, Richard M. Schilling, Barbara R. Tanaglia, Jane R. Thomas, James S. Whitehead and Jonathan S. Whitlock.

Other actions of the Board included the adoption of revised versions of the Student Handbook and the Harassment Policy, and the approval of the many construction projects planned for this summer. The board recognized the good work of our colleagues throughout the year and extends its thanks to one and all. It also approved the recommendations for two faculty promotions – Tammy Schiek to associate professor and Philip Soosloff to full professor; and granted faculty emeriti status to Diana Cullen, David Pippitt, Barb Swanson and Peter Tobias.

Have a great week!

Robert L. Head, Ph.D.
President
