Rockford, Ill. – On Saturday, May 8, the Rockford College baseball team will be doing its part to fight a disease that affects millions of people each year.  The Regents will be raising money to help bring awareness to the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, when they host the Benedictine University Eagles at Road Ranger Stadium.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.  The disease affects the brains ability to move the muscles, leaving patients in later stages of the disease totally paralyzed.  The disease most commonly affects as many as 30,000 Americans between the ages of 40 and 70.  The disease gained national attention on July 4, 1939, when Yankee great Lou Gehrig retired from baseball after being diagnosed with ALS.

Not only will fans be raising money for a great cause, they will be doing so while watching some of the best baseball in the Midwest.  Two of the last three years, the Regents and Eagles have faced each other on the final day of the Northern Athletics Conference regular season with serious post-season implications.  This year appears no different, as both teams are currently tied in the conference standings, battling for conference tournament berths.

The Regents have also organized a silent auction to take place during the doubleheader.  A wide-ranging list of auction items have been secured from such companies as the Chicago White Sox, Rockford Ice Hogs, Barnes & Noble, Kellogg, the YMCA, and Claudius and Company Jewelers, just to name a few.

Proceeds from ticket sales, raffles and a silent auction will be donated to the Greater Chicago Chapter of the ALS Association.  To learn more about ALS or to find out how you can help fight the disease, please visit their website at
