MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Rockford College softball team snapped its five game losing skid with a 10-7 win at Alverno College. The victory salvaged a split of the day’s double dip, after losing 12-6 in the opening game. The win also keeps Rockford’s slim hopes of a postseason berth alive.
The day looked as if it would be a cake walk for Rockford as they plated five runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by senior outfielder Biz Janusick’s (Spring Valley, Ill./ Illinois Valley CC) three-run home run to right centerfield. Rockford added another run in the second inning to take what seemed like a commanding 6-0 lead in the middle of the second inning, but then their bats went silent. Through Rockford’s final five at bats, the Regents recorded no hits, their only runners coming via a walk and hit batter. Meanwhile, Alverno plated three in the third. The Inferno put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with nine runs on four hits, while taking advantage of four walks, two hit batters, and an error.
Sophomore Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) led the Regents with two hits and two RBI’s. Janusick also recorded three RBI’s on her first inning home run.
Trailing 1-0 early in game two, Rockford’s bats finally woke up to the tune of five runs in the top of the second inning. Though the Inferno tied the game at six after five complete innings, Rockford responded with four runs over the final two innings, highlighted by a two run home run to centerfield by junior outfielder Alyssa Novak (Utica, Ill./ Illinois Valley CC).
Senior Aria Ruotsi (Zion, Ill./ Zion-Benton), Lawler, and freshman Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) recorded two hits each for the Regents. Novak’s three RBI’s and three runs scored also paced Rockford. Junior Eryn Dougherty (Ottawa, Ill./ Illinois Valley CC) pitched her 16 complete game en route to her seventh win of the year.
Rockford will welcome the Concordia University Chicago Cougars to campus on Wednesday for a NAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
