Regents Sweep Muskies

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College softball team used a dominant pitching performance and solid offense to sweep the Lakeland College Muskies on Sunday at the Smith Athletic Fields on the campus of Rockford College. The 10-0 and 6-1 wins improved the Regents 8-12 overall and 4-4 in the Northern Athletics Conference. The wins also marked the first time the Regents had defeated the Muskies in the five year history of the NAC (2-8).
Rockford jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring two runs in the first and four each in the second and third before the game was called in the middle of the fifth inning. Senior Kristi Durlak (Lake Villa, Ill./ Grant Community) paced the Regents with a 3-3 day with an RBI and three runs scored. Fellow seniors Aria Ruotsi (Zion, Ill./ Zion-Benton) and Biz Janusick (Spring Valley, Ill./ Illinois Valley CC) and sophomore Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) recorded two hits each in the win, with Ruotsi and Janusick record one triple each. Ruotsi also had two RBI’s. Junior pitcher Eryn Dougherty (Ottawa, Ill./ Illinois Valley CC) recorded her third win of the year, throwing five innings of three hit ball, while striking out four Muskies.
The offense continued for the Regents in game two, as Rockford opened with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Rockford also scored three runs in the third and an insurance run in the fifth for the 6-1 victory. Janusick, junior Paige Newhuis (Crete, Ill./ Prairie State College), and freshman Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./ Mundelein) recorded two hits each in the game. Janusck also knocked in two runs. Dougherty notched another win in game two, this one a seven inning affair, allowing just four hits, striking out five batters. The junior allowed just one base runner between the second and sixth innings.
Rockford will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Wednesday to face the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in a NAC doubleheader.
