LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Rockford College baseball team used all 51 possible outs on Saturday to sweep the visiting Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons at Road Ranger Stadium. The 5-4 and 12-11 wins improved the Regents record to 6-7 overall, 2-0 in the Northern Athletics Conference. Rockford has won three consecutive games, all in their final at-bat.
After a solid star by Regents senior Adam Ketzner (Mundelein, Ill./ Mundelein), the Falcons managed to open the scoring with solo runs in the third and fifth innings. Rockford responded in the fifth with two of their own with a double by junior first baseman Ryan Lesner (Algonquin, Ill./ Elgin CC), and singles by senior catcher Jordan Shaver (Davis Junction, Ill./ Rock Valley CC), sophomore Kipton Bucey (Byron, Ill./ Stillman Valley), and junior Ryne Billesbach (Belvidere, Ill./ Central College). Both teams plated runs in the sixth, the Regents’ run coming on a single to left field by junior Curt Daughenbaugh (Dakota, Ill./ Dakota) that scored junior Kevin Miller (Elk Grove Village, Ill./ College of Lake County) who tripled.
The Falcons took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 8th inning, leaving Rockford only six outs to mount a comeback. Senior Jimmy Polster (Spring Calley, Ill./ St. Bede) was called on to pinch hit and was subsequently hit by a pitch. Senior catcher Jordan Shaver was also hit, allowing Polster to advance to second base. Bucey’s textbook sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position with just one out. After strikeout, Billesbach again came through, this time with a bloop single to right field, scoring Polster and Shaver to give Rockford the walk-off win.
Ketzner got a no decision after going seven innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out six batters. Junior Jake Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./ Rock Valley CC) improved to 3-0 with two no-hit innings pitched. Billesbach paced the Regents offense with three hits and three RBI’s.
Rockford got off to a good start in the second game. Junior shortstop Jimmy Dercks (Kaukauna, Wis./ Kaukauna) crossed the plate in the first inning when Miller reached on a Falcon fielding error. CUW tied the game in the second, but Rockford’s offense exploded in the third. The Regents plated five runs, highlighted by Miller’s two RBI single. But just as fast as Rockford took the lead, they gave it back. The Falcons scored 10 earned runs over the next three innings.
The Regents, however, didn’t worry. They used their final six outs to mount a comeback. They cut the deficit to 11-9 after the seventh inning, when Rockford took advantage of four hits and two CUW wild pitches to score three runs. The Regents continued to take advantage of their chances in the eighth. Nicholson scored on a Billesbach triple. After a Dercks walk, Billesbach scored and Dercks advanced one base on a CUW balk, allowing the tying run to score. Miller then singled to center field, scoring Dercks for the game winner. Nicholson pitched the ninth inning for his first save of the season.
Rockford’s two, three, and four hitters (Billesbach, Dercks, and Miller) recorded three hits each, with Miller recording three RBI’s. Sophomore Justin Moore (Peru, Ill./ Illinois Valley CC) notched his first win of the year allowing just one earned run in 3.1 innings.
Rockford will travel to Fond du Lac, Wis. on Tuesday to face the Marian University Sabres before returning to Road Ranger Stadium on Friday to host the University of Chicago at 3:00 p.m.
