Remember, April 15 is just around the corner
Occasionally, members of the Executive Council share a message in this space. Today, we hear from Barrett Bell, Vice President for Enrollment Management.
Dear Students, Staff and Faculty:
So what’s in a date? April 15 is definitely one of those dates everyone knows. It is the deadline to file your Federal Tax Return with the IRS, although this year that deadline has been extended to April 18. For many students and others this will be the first time to enjoy the new experience.
Truly, this date conjures an array of emotions inside each of us. For some, the emotion is glee and it is their favorite time of year. It is the time when they put in lots of overtime and "rake in the bucks” doing tax returns for others. For others, the emotion is anticipation as they are able to make plans for the summer vacation. Still yet others experience a sigh of relief as they are finally able to pay off those Christmas credit card bills (hopefully, everyone does pay off those Christmas bills.)
I have to confess that for years this date was a haunting one which did nothing but make me anxious. Even being a "numbers guy” I worried about making mistakes or losing out on refund money which the family needed or not being able to understand all the rules, or not having the right form, and the list goes on. Well, if you have not yet done your taxes, I encourage you to visit the IRS website (www.irs.gov). Although I am not a tax expert, I have found the site to be vastly improved, containing more information and resources. I would especially draw your attention to the deduction for student loan interest paid during the year or the deduction for some tuition and fees. Additionally, the Lifetime Learning Credit or the American Opportunity Credit may be very beneficial. You will have to check out all the details and see what applies to your situation.
There are also free electronic filing options, which have been available for quite a few years and are very convenient. Did you know that you can electronically file your taxes free if your Adjusted Gross Income is less than $58,000? The IRS estimates this applies to about 70% of taxpayers. And, when you file electronically you receive your refund in about three weeks, less than half the time of filing a paper return. Further, if you use direct deposit your turn around time is even reduced by a few more days.
Nevertheless, each of us should be encouraged to not procrastinate and get our taxes submitted. As every student knows, this is an essential part of the financial aid process as well. If all this is just too overwhelming, my advice is to make friends with a "numbers guy or girll” – he/she will enjoy the challenge.

Next Forum Event Thursday, March 24: Climate Change
Dr. Bette Otto-Bliesner will Bette Otto-Bleisner, Ph.D., senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), is our next Forum Series presenter. Her presentation, "Climate change: What Can Happen and What Earth’s Past Can Tell Us” will be in Peterson Auditorium, Starr Science Center, on Thursday, March 24, at 4 p.m.
NCAR scientists served as authors or reviewers for reports by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Dr Bliesner's research interests are in using computer-based models of Earth's climate to investigate past climate change across a wide range of time scales. She earned her doctorate in meteorology in 1981 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Admission is free but tickets are required. Got Failed Forums?
If you have any failed Forum semesters, the deadline for make-up essay submission is Monday, April 11, 2011 by 5 p.m. Essays must be turned in to the Box Office in Clark Arts Center. This means you have 3 weeks to turn in essays.

Excellence in Teaching Award 2011 Nominations Due April 8
It is time to nominate faculty members who demonstrate outstanding teaching ability. This year two awards will be made. One of course will be the traditional award to a full-time faculty member. The second award will be made to an adjunct faculty member. As we all know, our adjunct colleagues make important and in many cases sustained contributions to the academic success of our students.
Please take a few minutes to consider a faculty member who displays excellence in teaching for this award. Forms can be found at myrockford.edu/Forms/Academics. All nominations are due by April 8 to Cathy Kight, firstname.lastname@example.org. The award will be presented at Honor’s Day, May 4, 2011.
Performing Arts Student Recital
All are welcome to attend the Performing Arts Student Recital, today, Monday, March 21, at 4 p.m., Maddox Theatre, Clark Arts Center.
Wednesday, March 23, 2011, Rockford College Intramurals will be hosting a Doubles Pickleball Tournament. If you want to play, email Ryan Mills (email@example.com) your name and your partner’s name. The deadline to sign up is Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. The tournament will begin at 8:30p.m. in Seaver Gymnasium.
International Food Fair Volunteers Needed
Would you like to volunteer at the International Food Fair 2011 and get a free ticket? If yes, please reply to firstname.lastname@example.org. We need about 30 people to serve food for an hour on Saturday, April 2, from either 5:45 - 6:45 p.m. OR from 6:45 - 7:45 p.m. And remember – just one hour gets you a free ticket and plenty of terrific dishes to try! Thanks for being part of this year’s "Around the world one bite at a time" theme of the International Food Fair 2011.
Last day to Withdraw Classes with "W” Moved to 4/8
The last day to withdraw from classes with a W final grade was moved to Friday, April 8, at 5 pm. This change is reflected in the Academic Calendar posted on the web-site at http://www.rockford.edu/?page=AcademicCalendar.
You must drop classes by using a Drop/Add form only. These forms are available either from your advisor or at the SAS Office in Burpee. Self Service does not permit students to withdraw from classes from the current semester on-line, therefore, be certain to give yourself enough time to complete the drop process before 5 pm on Friday, April 8.
· All undergraduate forms must be signed by your advisor before submission for processing.
· Graduate students should contact the Graduate Office (815-226-4040) directly if you have questions regarding withdrawing from classes.
Student Showcase of Academic Achievement
You are invited to participate in the Student Showcase of Academic Achievement to take place on Wednesday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All Students are encouraged to display their finest works, give talks, or similar activities to the campus community. All project applications are due by Friday, April 8.
All who attend have a chance of winning one of several prizes that include gas station and book store gift cards or free lunches; those who participate are automatically entered into the drawing. Please let us know if you have any questions!
