Regents Battle Back to Win in Extras

MESA, Ariz. – After a tough day on Saturday, the Regents baseball team bounced back nicely to defeat Western New England College 8-5 in 12 innings. After taking an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Rockford surrendered 4 runs in the bottom of the second to fall behind 4-2. Western New England added another run in the third inning to extend its lead to 5-2. The Regents slowly chipped away at the lead adding 1 run in the fifth inning off of an RBI single by junior third baseman Jake Nicholson (Stillman Valley, Ill./Rock Valley CC). In the sixth inning, sophomore left fielder Kipton Bucey (Byron, Ill./Stillman Valley) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a 5-4 game. Rockford tied the game in the eighth inning with another clutch hit by left fielder Kipton Bucey. Both teams were held scoreless until the twelfth inning when the Regents scored 3 runs. Senior catcher Jordan Shaver (Davis Junction, Ill./Rock Valley CC) hit in the game winning run on a single to right center field. Rockford pitching was outstanding over the final 9 innings of the game surrendering 0 runs and only 2 hits.
Junior pitcher Jake Nicholson threw 5 innings in relief today for Rockford. Nicholson entered the game in the eighth inning and pitched the remainder of the game. He threw 79 pitches, struck out 4 batters and allowed only 1 hit. Pitcher Justin Moore (Peru, Ill./Illinois Valley CC) threw two and two-thirds innings in relief as well. Moore surrendered no hits and stuck out 1 batter on the mound.
Junior right fielder Ryne Billesbach (Belvidere, Ill./Central College) had a great day at the plate for the Regents. Billesbach finished the day going 4 for 6 and scored 4 runs. He led off the eighth inning with a triple to right center, and then scored the tying run later in the inning. Billesbach also scored the game winning run in the twelfth inning and now leads the team with a .529 batting average. Jordan Shaver posted his third multi-hit game of the season going 3 for 6. Shaver leads the team with 10 runs batted in. Kipton Bucey finished the game going 3 for 5 with 2 runs batted in; it was his third multi-hit game of the season. Bucey is now hitting .412 for the season. Junior Chris Thomas (Hanover Park, Ill./Elgin CC) went 2 for 3 in his first start of the season for the Regents. Thomas also had a run batted in and a walk. The Regents 7-9 batters collected almost half of the team’s 17 hits going 8-14 at the plate.
The Regents improved their record to 3-3 with today’s win. Rockford College will be back in action on Monday against William Paterson University at 11:30 a.m. CST.
