Big Inning Sparks Regents to Victory

CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Regents got off to a slow start in today’s game against St. Mary’s University. After falling behind 4-0 after the 2nd inning, Rockford was able to cut the lead in half scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th. St. Mary’s extended its lead to 8-2 by stringing together 4 hits in the top of the 6th inning along with a hit batsman. The Regents responded with 4 hits and 4 walks to spark an 8 run bottom of the inning giving them a 10-8 lead. Rockford put the game away in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring 5 runs on 4 hits extending its lead to 15-8.
Outfielder Kipton Bucey (Byron, Ill./Stillman Valley) delivered a big 2-RBI double down the left field line on an 0-1 count to help open up the scoring in the 6th inning for the Regents. Bucey also hit an RBI single to right field in the 8th inning. For the day, Bucey finished the game going 2-4 with 3 runs batted in and a walk. Senior catcher Jordan Shaver (Davis Junction, Ill./Rock Valley CC) continued his red hot hitting, going 2-4 with 4 runs batted in. Shaver had an RBI single to short in the 4th, an RBI walk in the 6th, and a 2-run single to right field on a 1-2 count in the bottom of the 8th to break the game open. He now leads the team with 9 runs batted in for the year. Junior outfielder Curt Daughenbaugh (Dakota, Ill./Dakota) posted his second 3-hit game of the year, and has multiple hits in all 3 games this season. Daughenbaugh is hitting a scorching .571 on the season.
Sophomore pitcher Zac Wolf (LaSalle, Ill./Dominican University) picked up the win on the mound for the Regents today. In his Regent debut today, Wolf threw 3 innings in relief giving up only 2 earned runs.
The Regents return to action on Saturday March 11th against Central College. The two teams will play a doubleheader at the Gene Autry Complex in Mesa, Ariz. starting at 1 p.m. CST.
