CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Rockford College baseball team won its first game of the year defeating the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford Panthers today, 16-9. The pitching for both teams dominated the early part of the game as there were only 2 hits combined in the first 3 innings. Then the offense took over for Rockford putting up 6 runs in the top of the 4th inning to give the Regents a comfortable 6-0 lead, but the Panthers answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. The Regents subsequently added to their lead with 2 more runs in both the 5th and 6th innings and 1 run in the 7th inning. The University of Pittsburgh-Bradford cut the Regents 8 run lead down to 3, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the eighth. As all good teams do, Rockford answered in the top of the 9th inning by scoring 5 runs and putting the game out of reach.
Senior Ben Korth (Freeport, Ill./Orangeville) picked up the win pitching 5 strong innings for the Regents. Korth gave up only 2 earned runs while striking out 2 on 84 pitches.
The Regents got numerous outstanding performances at the plate in today’s game. Senior catcher Jordan Shaver (Davis Junction, Ill./ Rock Valley CC) provided some clutch hitting for Rockford. Shaver went 2-4 on the day with 5 runs batted in. He hit a 2-RBI single to center field in the 5th inning and a 2-out 2-run single to right center field in the 6th inning. Junior outfielder Curt Daughenbaugh (Dakota, Ill./Dakota) continued his red hot hitting going 2-4 with 2 walks and 2 runs batted in. Daughenbaugh is now 5-9 for the season. Freshman outfielder Matt Grimes (O’Fallon, Mo./Fort Zuwalt West) hit his first collegiate home run and the Regents first home run of the season to lead off the 7th inning. Through the first two games of the year, the Regents have scored 23 runs on 29 hits.
