LISLE, Ill. – The Rockford College men’s basketball season came to an end last night with a 91-76 loss at Benedictine University in the first round of the Northern Athletics Conference tournament.
The Regents faced a tough task facing the Eagles who had already defeated Rockford twice this season. Through the game’s first few minutes it looked as if the Regents would be able to hang, but trailing by one just under six minutes into the game, Benedictine embarked on a 14-2 run. The run left Rockford trailing 24-11 midway through the first stanza. Rockford continued to fight, whittling their deficit to three points late in the first half, but a Benedictine three pointer at the halftime buzzer game the Eagles the momentum and a six point halftime lead.
Scoring the first six points of the second half, the Eagles immediately pushed their advantage back to12 points. The lead would remain between eight and 12 points for most of the second half. Each time it looked as if Rockford was going to grab the game’s momentum and make a come back, Benedictine would make a big defensive stop and score.
Rockford senior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens) closed his career with his eighth 30 point game of the season, leading the Regents with 35 points and nine bounds. Junior Dominique Walker (Lansing, Ill./ Morgan Park) added 16 points and six boards off the bench for the Regents.
Rockford finished the season 10-15 overall and 6-10 in the NAC.
