ROCKFORD, Ill. – There will be added meaning to the Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader at the Seaver Center on Saturday. When the Rockford College Regents host the Benedictine University Eagles, the Regents will participate in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) "Pink Zone” initiative, designed to bring awareness to the need for breast cancer research. The games, which will take place in the Seaver Center on the campus of Rockford College, will begin at 2:00 p.m. with the women’s game, followed by the men at 4:00 p.m.
The WBCA’s "Think Pink” initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA’s nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The WBCA began "Think Pink” in 2007 as an initiative to raise awareness for breast cancer in women’s basketball, on campuses, and in communities. In 2010, over 1,800 participants came together to surpass $1,045,000 in donations and reached more than 922,000 fans across the nation. Overall, the WBCA Pink Zone has raised nearly $3.3 Million, has reached almost 2.7 Million fans, and has unified over 4,700 participants in only four years.
The Rockford College women’s and men’s basketball teams will wear "Shoot for the Cure” t-shirts during warm-ups. The same "Shoot for the Cure” t-shirts will be available for purchase with proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society. Officials for both games are also joining NCAA officials around the country in using pink whistles for games during the initiative. All fans attending the game are asked to wear pink to show their support for the fight against breast cancer.
Join the Rockford College basketball teams on Saturday, February 12 at Seaver Gym on the Rockford College campus and help fight breast cancer.
