AURORA, Ill. – The Rockford College women’s basketball team pushed their current win streak to three games with a 77-73 road win over Aurora University. The victory improves the Regents’ record to 9-11 overall, but 7-6 in the Northern Athletics Conference, placing them squarely in the hunt for a post-season tournament birth.
The Regents have used the same modus operandi for their three game streak. Balanced scoring and a dominant rebounding performance have been crucial to wins over Concordia Chicago, Maranatha, and Aurora. Over those three games, at least three players have scored in double figures and the Regents have outrebounded their opponents by an average of 18.3 rebounds per game.
That was certainly evidenced in Thursday win at Aurora. For the first time in years, all five Regents starters scored in double figures, led by junior Nicole Olson (Shannon, Ill./ Eastland) who scored a career-high 18 points. Three players also recorded double-doubles led by fellow junior Britney Curry’s (Merrillville, Ind./ Merrillville) 16 points and 10 boards. The Lawler sisters, Megan and Nicole (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) also notched double-doubles, combining for 25 points and 23 rebounds. Junior Kelcy Thorsen (Ottawa, Ill./ Serena) added 12 points for Rockford.
Rockford commanded the glass from the first minute of the game and never let up. The Regents held Aurora with out a rebound for the game’s first seven minutes while grabbing five of their own. By halftime, Rockford had a 25-11 advantage in rebounds. After the game’s 40 minutes, the Regents claimed a 48-30 rebounding lead, including 19 offensive rebounds for Rockford. All eight Regents that saw the floor grabbed at least two boards.
The Regents will look to continue their win streak on Saturday when they welcome the Alverno College Inferno to the Seaver Center for a 2:00 p.m. game.
