ROCKFORD, Ill. – With just four games remaining in their NAC schedule, the Rockford College men’s basketball team improved their chances for a postseason berth after holding on for a 90-81 win over the visiting Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders on Saturday.
The Crusaders took the lead early in the game, but an 11-2 run midway through the first half game Rockford its first lead of the game. The Regents extended their advantage to 10 points twice before the break, en route to a 44-39 lead at halftime.
Maranatha opened the second half much like the first, taking a three point lead after a 10-2 run. But just in the first half, the Regents responded. Over the next seven minutes, Rockford outscored Maranatha 20-6 to establish a 66-55 lead with just over nine minutes to play. The Regents, however, didn’t rest on their lead. By the five minute mark, Rockford had extended their advantage to a game-high 20 points. Rockford held on to the win connecting on 10-12 from the charity stripe over the game’s final two minutes.
Balanced scoring was key to the victory, as six Regents scored at least eight points. Senior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens) led Rockford with 21 points. Freshman Clem Robinson (Milwaukee, Wis./ Nicolet) added 16 points off the bench including 4-5 from three point range. Senior Taylor Stinson (Schiller Park, Ill./ East Leyden) tallied 11 points.
