ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College women’s basketball team used a balanced attack and a dominant rebounding performance in a wire-to-wire victory over the visiting Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders.  The 70-50 victory was highlighted by a career milestone for junior Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./ Merrillville) who became the 10th Regents women’s basketball player to reach the 1,000 point plateau.

The Crusaders managed the first basket of the game, but for the next 39 minutes, the floor belonged to the Regents.  Over the next six minutes, Rockford went on a 16-0 run, setting a pace and flow for the rest of the game.  By the break, Rockford led MBBC 37-22. The Regents forced 15 first half turnovers and allowed the Crusaders only nine first half field goals.

The Regents came out of the locker room with the same sense of urgency from the beginning of the game, opening the half on a 10-2 run.  A Rockford 14-2 run midway through the second half pushed the Regents’ advantage to a game-high 31 points with seven minutes to play.

With the game’s outcome no longer in doubt, the focus turned to Curry’s milestone.  After recording nine points in the first half, Curry connected on a lay-up with 14:31 left in the game, leaving her at 998 points.  Connecting on one of two free throws at the 8:19 mark put her on the brink of the milestone.  It would be nearly six minutes of game time before Curry connected on an and-one layup at the 2:39 mark, surpassing the 1,000 point mark.

Four Regents scored in double-figures lead by senior Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City), who tallied 15 points, 17 rebounds, four steals, and five assists.  Juniors Curry and Kelcy Thorsen (Ottawa, Ill./ Serena) notched 14 points each, while junior Nicole Olson (Shannon, Ill./ Eastland) added 10 points.  The Regents dominated the glass to the tune of a 41-28 rebound lead en route to a 22-7 advantage in second change points.

Rockford (8-11, 6-6 NAC) will travel to Aurora University on Wednesday to face the Spartans before returning to the Saver Center on Saturday to host Alverno College.
