ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College men’s basketball team rebounded from last week’s disappointing home loss to Wisconsin Lutheran with a resounding 100-72 defeat of North Central University. Rockford used a record breaking shooting performance and a deep bench to jump on the Rams early. The win improves the Regents overall record to 6-4.
Senior Taylor Stinson (Schiller Park, Ill./ East Leyden) provided a spark for the Regents early and never let off the pedal. Trailing by five points just two minutes into the game, the Regents’ offense came alive. Rockford shot 67.6% from the floor, including 11-16 from beyond the three-point arc, en route to a commanding 62-40 halftime lead. Stinson paced the Regents offense with an impressive 30 points point before the break, including eight made threes. Fellow senior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens) added 18 first half points.
Rockford emerged from the locker room with the same intensity, outscoring the Rams 30-13 over the first ten minutes of the second half, establishing a game-high 39 point lead. Rockford broke the century mark for the first time since November 24, 2009 when freshman Arthur Miller IV (Burlington, Wis./ Burlington) connected his first collegiate bucket, assisted by junior Alex Schofield (Spencer, Wis./ Spencer).
Stinson finished the game with a career-high 38 points on 14-21 shooting from the floor. He also set a new school record with 10 made three-pointers, breaking his previous record of nine set on February 14, 2009. Malone added 26 points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals, and three blocked shots.
Though Stinson and Malone were the only two Regents in double figure scoring, it was offensive balance and a deep bench that added to Rockford’s offense. Ten Regents players scored and Rockford maintained a 23-8 advantage in bench points led by senior Tyler Nauman (Hinckley, Ill./ Hinckley-Big Rock) and junior Dominique Walker (Lansing, Ill./ Morgan Park) who combined for 17 points, 8 rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Rockford will enjoy the Christmas break before returning to the Seaver Center floor on December 27, when the host North Central College.
